Newsletters

Too many organizations issue what they call newsletters that really only are self-promotion editorial advertisements or pleas for money or action.  If it doesn't contain "news," then it isn't a newsletter.  This is not the place for fund-raising or just a list of donors.  You will lose your readers if you do that.  There are other ways to recognize contributors.  First you need to determine the appropriate frequency and stick with it.  If you have lots of news, then a monthly newsletter is appropriate. If not, then consider bi-monthly or quarterly.  If you can't keep at least a quarterly schedule, then it's not a newsletter --- it's an "annual report."

Newsletters are different from blogs and can be distributed either in-house or to your membership, but NOT to both.  You must maintain a more secure and confidential tone when communicating with your staff, and a lot of the routine details of operation would be boring to your members.
